Tucked away in the heart of rural Essex, within the idyllic village of Moreton, lies our private 2.5-acre carp lake — a serene oasis set on picturesque farmland, just behind our award-winning 2 Rosette restaurant, The Dog & Pickle.

Our Journey began in 2022 when we took the lake on & it has since been lovingly transformed with dedicated craftsmanship into one of the region’s most exclusive boutique fisheries — a destination where luxury, tranquillity, and exceptional angling meet.

Designed with comfort and sociability in mind, the lake features three spacious double swims, accommodating up to six anglers in total. Each swim includes its own firepit, ideal for unwinding beneath the stars after a day on the rods. Two swims are campervan-friendly, offering optional power and water connections, while the third features a luxury shepherd’s hut — complete with a double bed, minibar, wood-burning stove, en-suite shower room, toilet, kitchen area and TV — the perfect blend of rustic charm and modern indulgence.

Originally excavated in the 1980s as an irrigation pit, the lake boasts depths of up to 28ft, with carefully contoured margins and underwater features introduced during our three-year renovation project. These enhancements provide a variety of depths from 5ft to 12ft, offering both challenge and opportunity for the observant angler. The varying depths mean our lake will fish well throughout the cold winter months as the fish will tend to find & feed in the deeper warmer water.

When we first took on the lake, it held around 80 original carp — beautiful, characterful fish that have thrived in their natural environment. The largest, affectionately named The Game Changer, weighed an impressive 40lb in the summer of 2025. Her capture marked a defining moment for us, confirming that the passion, hard work, and countless hours invested were truly worthwhile.

Our carefully managed stocking and feeding programme has since brought the water to life. In 2023, we introduced 85 additional carp ranging from 1lb to 22lb, followed in 2025 by a select group of larger specimens at 31lb, 32lb, and 33.5lb, as well as 11 pristine stockies between 10lb and 12lb. The lake now holds over 170 carp, many showing exceptional growth rates thanks to our nutrient-rich waters and expert care.

With its natural depth, the lake remains largely weed-free, yet offers a wealth of underwater features and varied topography to explore. The surrounding woodland brings seasonal beauty — and a few fallen leaves — so we recommend the use of bait boats, solid bags, or chod rigs for optimal presentation. The deeper areas are predominantly silty, while the margins offer firm clay and gravel plates, providing perfect opportunities to locate and present your bait precisely.

Being situated directly behind The Dog & Pickle, guests enjoy a unique combination of first-class fishing and fine dining. During your stay, you can pre-order from our exclusive lakeside menu, freshly prepared by our award-winning chefs for convenient delivery to your swim. Alternatively, step away from the rods, freshen up in our on-site facilities, and join us at the restaurant for a leisurely lunch or dinner — reservations can be arranged at the time of booking.

To maintain the integrity of our ecosystem and the continued health of our fish, we kindly request that all bait used is purchased directly from us. This allows us to monitor feed levels closely and ensure optimal growth and water quality. Bait can be pre-ordered in 5kg bags, and we can also provide firewood and kindling for your firepits at your request, ready upon arrival.
